What building code does Raleigh, NC use?
Raleigh, NC currently enforces the 2018 North Carolina Building Code (based on 2015 IBC). Raleigh enforces the state-adopted code. Per NC OSFM the 2018 NC State Building Codes (2015 I-Codes with NC amendments) and 2020 NC Electrical Code remain the enforced editions: the adopted 2024 NC codes (plus 2023 NC Electrical Code) had their mandatory effective date delayed by S.L. 2024-57 and S.L. 2025-2 to 12 months after State Fire Marshal certification (still pending as of July 2026, though usable now as an owner-elected alternate), and cities cannot amend the technical State Building Code (G.S. 143-138), so Raleigh enforces the state editions as-is.
