New York City, NY currently enforces the 2022 New York City Building Code (Title 28 / 2022 NYC Construction Codes, based on the 2015 IBC with extensive city amendments). New York City adopts its own code editions. NYC writes its own full code family (2022 NYC Construction Codes effective Nov 7, 2022, based on 2015 I-Codes) with no separate residential code (one/two-family work falls under the Building Code); the electrical, energy, and fire codes update on their own tracks (2025 NYC Electrical Code took full effect Dec 21, 2025), and a new NYC Existing Building Code was enacted in January 2026 but does not take effect until July 2027.
