What building code does Chicago, IL use?
Chicago, IL currently enforces the 2019 Chicago Building Code, Title 14B (Chicago amendments to the 2018 IBC). Chicago adopts its own code editions. Chicago maintains its own home-rule Chicago Construction Codes (Titles 14A-14X) under a phased modernization: the building, rehabilitation, and energy titles are modern I-Code-based (2018 IBC/IEBC, 2021 IECC) while fire prevention, plumbing, mechanical, and fuel gas remain interim legacy codes, and the electrical code is still based on the 2017 NEC with no 2021-IBC or 2023-NEC update in force as of July 2026; Chicago has no IRC-based residential code (residential work falls under Title 14B).
