What building code does Charlotte, NC use?

Charlotte, NC currently enforces the 2018 North Carolina State Building Code: Building Code (based on 2015 IBC). Charlotte enforces the state-adopted code. The 2018 NC State Building Code (with the 2020 NEC effective 2021-11-01) remains in force as of July 2026 because S.L. 2024-57 and S.L. 2025-2 delayed the fully adopted 2024 Code (2021 I-Codes, 2023 NEC) until 12 months after State Fire Marshal certification, allowing it meanwhile only as an owner-requested alternate; permits for Charlotte are issued countywide by Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement and G.S. 143-138 bars local technical amendments.
